Martin Stefl (CTU) gave a paper “Innovating Business English? Implementing ICC-Content into HE Curicullum” at the 14th International conference on Efficiency and Responsibility in Education 2017 organised by the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. (See the programme here.) The presented paper has been published in the conference proceedings. (ISBN 978-80-2132762-7; ISSN 2336-774X. )  Both the paper and the presentation specifically mention the ICCAGE project.

Presentation of ICCAGE modules at the VII Jornadas de Secretariado e Assessoria

Águeda, Portugal 7 June 2017

The ICCAGE project outcomes (modules and their implementation) were presented at the VII Jornadas de Secretariado e Assessoria in Águeda, Portugal. The conference audience were teachers and students of Office Management, local authorities and employed secretaries.

The seminar was attended by circa 50 participants who showed great interest in the way the modules were developed and implemented. The presentation was done by Margarida Morgado, from Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco.

It was entitled: Aprender a Comunicar de Forma Intercultural ( Learning to communicate interculturally).

Workshop and Round Table in an international week in Finland

Tampere, 8th-12th May 2017

The biannual International Week called Language Teaching Tomorrow 2017, was organised on 8th-12th May 2017 in Tampere and Jyväskylä, Finland by Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) and JAMK University of Applied Sciences. The theme of the week was "Promoting Flexibility and Autonomy in Language Learning".

Agnes Kovatsne Loch and Ildiko Dosa, members of the ICCAGE project, participated in the event.

Ildiko Dosa and telecollaboration partner Emmanuel Abruquah from TAMK University chaired a round table discussion on ’Change in culture in the ESP classroom’.

Agnes Kovatsne Loch held a workshop on how ICCAGE materials were developed in the framework of the project with the title ‘From needs analysis to material development’.

Symposium held from 25th to 27th of April 2017 at the Internacional Conference SEI 2017 – Sociedad, Educación e Inclusión, in Granada, Spain, entitled (in Spanish): EL TRATAMIENTO DE LA COMPETENCIA COMUNICATIVA INTERCULTURAL EN LA ENSEÑANZA DE LAS LENGUAS, by Ruth Cañón Rodríguez (ULE), Ana Rosa Arias Gago (ULE), Jana Zverinova (CTU), Ágnes Pál (BBS) y André Costa (IPCB). The symposium made it possible for the audience to have an insight into the Spanish modules, showing students' feedback and results of each of the modules. This presentation was associated with four chapters published in Entornos y estrategias educativas para la inclusión social.

Presentation at the IATEFL Conference

Glasgow, 4-7 April 2017

The ICCAGE project outcomes were presented at the 51st International IATEFL Conference in Glasgow. The conference was held  at the Glasgow Conference and Exhibition Centre from 4th to 7th April 2017 and was attended by more than 2000 delegates from all over the world. Monika Hrebackova from the Czech Technical University in Prague presented the intercultural communicative competence as an advantage on the global job market, sharing resources, materials as well as experience of HE teachers involved in the ICCAGE telecollaborative and other activities. As the leader of an international team of educators who have taken upon themselves to built the professional growth opportunity, she pointed out some innovative ways and approaches which may help colleagues to learn and develop and which lead towards establishing more effective and dynamic learning environments.

Teacher mobility and cooperative workshop

Ana Rosa Arias Gago, from the University of Leon, visited the Budapest Business School from March 31 to April 2nd, as a visiting lecturer, and participated in the implementation of the Spanish modules of the ICCAGE project together with Hungarian project partners. Ana Rosa Arias Gago (ULE), Mária Szijj (BBS) and Ágnes Pál (BBS) gave a workshop in Spanish entitled El desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa en los módulos de ELE/EFE de un proyecto intercultural in the framework of the international conference co-organized by the Cervantes Institute of Budapest and the Association of Hungarian teachers of Spanish. Title of the conference:

Incursiones en el mar de contenidos socioculturales (V Jornadas Internacionales de Didáctica de Español como Lengua Extranjera).

Presentation at the Hradec Kralove Anglophone Conference

University of Hradec Kralove, 28-29th March 2017

The ICCAGE project was discussed at the Hradec Kralove Anglophone Conference on 28-29th March 2017. The conference was organized by the Faculty of Education of the University of Hradec Kralove and focused on Linguistics, Literature, Cultural Studies and ELT Methodology.

Monika Hrebackova and Hana Pavelkova from the Czech Technical University in Prague presented on the intercultural project topics in the context of the latest EU developments. Monika Hrebackova assessed the rationale behind the intercultural language competence acquisition in pursuit of purposeful ICC development, considered its challenges and opportunities in the field of international project cooperation, and demonstrated shifts in teaching approaches and language curricula in HE. Hana Pavelkova focused on the discussion on the impact of Brexit on ELT in the light of exchange programmes, funding, research as well as teachers and students.

Telecollaboration in education and the 21st century skills

Round table event at the BBS

A round table entitled Telecollaboration in education and the 21st century skills organized and led by Ildikó Dósa, took place in the framework of the conference about Research and Applied Sciences at the Budapest Business School. Apart from the participants from the Budapest Business School: Ildikó Dósa (Language Department, Faculty of Finance and Accountancy), György Hauber (Department of Economics, Faculty of Finance and Accountancy), Eszter Benke and Ágnes Pál (Language Department, Faculty of Commerce, Tourism and Hospitality), two  experts were invited with relevant experience in telecollaborative projects in higher Education: Ida Dringó-Horváth (Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary) and Ildikó Lázár (University ELTE). The participants could share ideas about telecollaboration and internationalization-at-home, discussing methodological questions and involving the audience.

Réka Asztalos and Ágnes Pál (BBS) participated in the 2nd Conference on Instructional Design and Information Technology for Learning held at Eszterhazy Karoly University of Applied Sciences, Hungary. They both gave a presentation (in Hungarian) also streamed online. Ágnes Pál gave a presentation entitled Developing intercultural communication competence in the framework of Business Spanish courses via online cooperative project tasks for university students  and Réka Asztalos talked about ICT based international cooperation in the framework of an ESP course.

Sharing experiences about the project with our colleagues

Institute of Languages and Communication at the Budapest Business School

The Language Department of the College of Commerce, Catering and Tourism hosted a dissemination event of the ICCAGE project on the 6th of January 2017, attended by 48 colleagues from the Institute of Languages and Communication at the Budapest Business School. Ágnes Loch, head of the Institute gave a detailed overview of the project, and Eszter Benke, head of the  Foreign Language Examination Centre of the Budapest Business School presented the module Communicating Online, she had implemented in cooperation with Robert O’Dowd, in which her tourism students were cooperating with Tourism students of the University of León. In parallel sessions, the participants could share experiences and listen to the presentation and feedback of all the educators involved in creating, piloting and implementing the ICCAGE modules at BBS. The aim was to encourage colleagues to participate in the project during the next term of the academic year 2016/17, to share methodology and experiences about telecollaboration and to give inspiration for further projects.

BRIDGING ACROSS LANGUAGES AND CULTURES IN EVERYDAY LIVES: NEW ROLES FOR CHANGING SCENARIOS

Four of the project team members (Monika Hrebackova, Jana Zverinova, Ágnes Loch and Ágnes Pál)  assisted at the IALIC 2016 conference BRIDGING ACROSS LANGUAGES AND CULTURES IN EVERYDAY LIVES: NEW ROLES FOR CHANGING SCENARIOS, held in Barcelona (November 25-27, 2016). Based on the first year’s project outcomes, the audience of the conference was given an insight into the ICCAGE project at the presentations by Monika Hrebackova: Innovating ICC teaching – from vision to reality, and Jana Zverinova: In pursuit of intercultural communicative competence. Using a broader approach, Ágnes Pál gave a presentation entitled What does the concept of ’interculturality’ mean in European projects?

Presentation of André Costa and Luis Vicente Gómez García of a paper authored by Margarida Morgado, Luis Gómez Garcia, and André Costa at the International Annual Conference of the Portuguese Education Society, which happened in Viseu, Portugal at the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu (6-8/10/2016). The paper has been published as part of the SPCE XIII proceedings. It describes and discusses intercultural competences and the need for intercultural dialogue in businesses and how this need can be matched with Higher Education training in Foreign Languages.

​Second International Conference on Telecollaboration in Higher Education

Four members of the ICCAGE project team: Robert O'Dowd, Jana Zverinova, Ágnes Pál and Ildikó Dósa participated in the Second International Conference on Telecollaboration in Higher Education, held in Trinity College Dublin, 21st-23rd April 2016. Robert O’Dowd (University of Leon) gave a presentation entitled: “On the outside looking in”: A Review of Criticism of Telecollaborative Research and Practice". Ágnes Pál (BBS) gave a presentation with co-author Ysabel Olmo: Fruits of a Conference: A Padua-Budapest Telecollaboration Initiative. Ildikó Dósa presented the poster International online cooperation in teaching intercultural communication and gave a presentation in the Problem sharing session with co-authors Emmanuel Ebenezer Abruquah, Mirja Kinnunen, Vuokko Penttilä, and Miguel Ángel Candel Mora: Problems in Motivating Students in Active Telecollaboration. Jana Zverinova (CTU) chaired one of the sessions of the conference. The event was an excellent opportunity for sharing experience about telecollaboration.

A presentation was given by Ágnes Pál about the learning outcomes of the joint staff training of the ICCAGE project at the 3rd Forum of Applied Sciences, held at the Budapest Business School. The aim of the conference – apart from presenting the latest research results – is to show how research activity performance could contribute to modernizing the content and to updating the required knowledge for practice-oriented training, as well.

World Café Event

Ágnes Kovátsné Loch and Ágnes Pál, from the Budapest Business School, organized a world café event for the participants of the conference entitled Intercultural communication and teaching foreign languages for specific purposes - what, for whom, how?. After a short introduction, we had inspiring conversations in small groups, seeking the answers to the following questions:

  • Why do our students need to study intercultural communication and which competences do they need to develop?

  • Which are the most efficient methods to develop them?

The posters created by the participants sum up the main points of the conversations. At the end of this enriching experience, we informed the participants about the ICCAGE Specialist Seminar.
